The Effect of Cognitive-Behavioral Group Counseling on Self-Esteem in the Institutionalized Elderly

Nowadays, the number of old people who live in the elderly housing facilities is going up with increase of the life expectancy. This study was conducted to examine the effect of the cognitive-behavioral group counseling on self-esteem in the institutionalized elderly. As pre-examination, the levels of self-esteem in both the experimental group and the control group were measured. After nine times of the cognitive-behavioral group counseling were tried for the experimental group, the levels of self-esteem in both groups were again measured. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. The experimental group showed significantly high score than that of the control group in the level of self-esteem. In the later examination which was conducted after 8weeks, the experimental group also displayed high score. In conclusion, the cognitive-behavioral group counseling appeared to be effective psychological intervention in increasing self-esteem in the elderly. Thus it is suggested in this study that the counseling program must be used in the elderly housing facilities to improve quality of old people``s life.
